Tungsten Overview

Eagle Alloys Corporation (EAC) is a leading global supplier of Commercially Pure Tungsten (W), High Density Machinable Tungsten Alloy, and Copper Tungsten Alloys in foil, strip, sheet, plate, wire, pins, rod, bar, blanks, pipe, tubing, fittings, nozzles, crucibles as well as semi-finished and finished parts, custom sizes, and custom grades. A wide variety of sizes are available from stock with same or next day shipping.

Eagle Alloys Corporation is an ISO Certified Corporation and has been supplying the highest quality metals for over 35 years.

What are common industrial and secondary applications of Tungsten?

COMMERCIALLY PURE TUNGSTEN: Some example uses are rocket nozzles, nuclear and medical radiation shielding for x-ray and radiation therapy shields and industrial applications, aircraft and helicopter rotor balance weights, instrument balance weights, metal evaporation work, inert gas welding electrodes, weights for sport equipment, tool damping cutter bars, and high voltage contacts.

HIGH DENSITY TUNGSTEN ALLOYS: Manufactured by powder metallurgy methods. The tungsten base offers high thermal conductivity and a low CTE which combine to resist thermal fatigue. The high melting point reduces soldering or erosion problems. To increase the machinability of this brittle metal, alloying elements are added. High Density Tungsten alloys have greater ductility and better machinability than with pure Tungsten.

Applications include nuclear and medical radiation shielding for x-ray and radiation therapy shields and industrial applications, aircraft and helicopter rotor balance weights, instrument balance weights, weights for sport equipment, tool damping cutter bars, and high voltage contacts. Uses: Radiation Shielding, High Mass, Gyro, Ordnance. Also, for use as ballast weights, radiation shields, boring bars, ordnance components, and other components that require high density and good ductility. Balance weights, radiation protection, vibration absorbers, heat transfer, drilling bars. The mechanical characteristics have to guarantee the stability and strength in any application case.

The absorption of x-ray and gamma radiation is in direct proportion to the density of the shielding. Used in resistance brazing and high temp applications. Used as counter weights and counter balances, radiation shielding components, tool shanks for boring bars and other tools for chatter-free machining. Tungsten high density composites are more than 1.5 times as effective as lead and provide extremely efficient protection, particularly where space is limited.

Applications:
• Nuclear and medical radiation shielding for x-ray and shields for radiation therapy and industrial applications.
• Aircraft and helicopter rotor balance weights
• Instrument balance weights
• Weights for sport equipment
• Tool damping cutter bars
• High voltage contacts

Uses: Electrical contacts resistant to arcing, power transformer switches, resistance / projection welding electrodes, and EDM electrodes

Tungsten & Tungsten Alloys Specifications & Applications

It is very important for customers to determine which one of the three categories of Tungsten your application and specifications require.  The three major categories are Tungsten, High Density Machinable Tungsten Alloy, or Copper Tungsten Alloy.  Each of these three categories have very different prices, availability, chemical compositions, physical properties, machinability and very different applications.
